Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy
The Relationship Center of Michigan provides training to mental health professionals in Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples (EFCT).
This exciting therapy was developed about 20 years ago. It is a short-term (8-20 sessions) therapy which has been shown to be highly effective.
Studies show that 90% of couples show improvement with EFCT. Between 70% and 73% of couples, who are identified as living in distressed relationships, improve to the point that their relationship is no longer distressed. The average effect size is 1.3. By comparison, other couple therapies have a 35% to 50% success rate, with effect size of .6 to .9.
Many therapies assume that negative emotions, interactions and conflict lead to a decrease in positive feelings between couples. Consequently, many couple therapies emphasize teaching couples to communicate positively and to fight appropriately.
EFCT, which is based on attachment theory, takes a different view. It is the lack of closeness and trust which causes the conflict and negative feelings. This lack leaves each partner with unfulfilled attachment needs which are indirectly expressed in anger, defensiveness or withdrawal. These unfulfilled needs initiate the process of distress.
EFCT helps couples to reprocess their emotional experience. It uses emotional expressions to create change and choreographs new interactions. These interventions shift couples’ attitudes and responses to each other. All of which re-creates the intimacy they lost.
